Full course description

The history of rural health in Virginia is deeply rooted in the state's diverse geography and the longstanding disparities in access to medical care. From the earliest days of settlement, rural Virginians—particularly those in the Appalachian and Tidewater regions— faced challenges related to isolation, poverty, and limited infrastructure. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, healthcare in these areas was often provided by traveling physicians, midwives, or small community clinics with minimal resources. These limitations meant that residents had fewer options for preventive care or treatment of chronic illnesses, contributing to poorer health outcomes compared with urban populations. This module will explore these historical factors, key developments, challenges and strategies for addressing rural health needs in Virginia.
